RISE Up! is an optional school year program available to Voyager participants, focused on spoken word poetry and storytelling. On Saturday mornings, the youth come together to discuss topics related to identity, community, empathy, and social action. Staff and students make art, share ideas, and explore the power of words in a safe and supportive environment.
Student portfolios are available to view here.
Favorite Moment: “There are so many moments where our youth suprise me with their courage to explore, take risks, and express who they are through their art. Every final share moves me--I see our youth becoming the leaders of the community.” - Samantha Martinson (Performing Arts Program Manager)
Who: 6th-8th grade participants. These students are committed to exploring their creative voices through written words, storytelling and spoken poetry.
What: RISE Up! (Reach inside for self-expression) is a social-justice based school year program focused on spoken word and storytelling. It is available for 6-8th graders; Voyagers 1-3. Youth explore different formats of poetry and storytelling as an art; they are challenged to actively reflect and work towards social change on a personal and communal level. In previous sessions, youth have worked with local, professional storytelling and slam poets. Rise Up participants present their work for family, friends, and the Milwaukee community at the end of each semester. Final shares have included open mic events and performing at the MIlwaukee Repertory Theater’s Story Slam event in the Spring of 2016.
When: School Year Programming: Rise UP-runs for six weeks on Saturdays in the fall and six saturdays in the spring. Time: 10:00-12:30pm.
Why: Our program allows our youth to express their voices through art! Often we are unable to express who we are in regular life; our goal is to help you find your true self.
