What is a favorite memory from your time at LVC?

My favorite memory at LVC are the campfires. I loved seeing the kids perform songs, skits, and even stand up comedy routines. The kids weren't the only performers at LVC. My fellow pioneer village counselors and I would occasionally treat LVC to a few remixes that we wrote. We have performed remixes to top hits such as Justin Bieber's "Sorry", and Beyonce's "Halo". Our energy matched the kids energy and it was always an amazing time. It was so beautiful seeing everyone come out of their shells and participating.

What is the most valuable thing you learned at LVC?

The most valuable thing I learned at LVC is the importance of looking past the surface. I feel that as a society, we are so quick to judge others. We need to take the time to look past the surface and really get to know others. It is important to embrace each other for whom they truly are.

Which of the four beliefs resonates with you most strongly?

The Four Beliefs that resonates with me the strongest is "We can only grow when we are honest about our mistakes". An open and honest environment can promote great growth and positivity . Everyone makes mistakes; it takes a strong person to admit it. Fostering an open environment is essential for the growth of children. They have to know that making a mistake does not mean you are in trouble or you are a failure. That is why it is so important to discuss your mistakes; we must grow from them.

What would you like other people to know about LVC?

I want people to know that LVC has been the most significant experience that I have had in my life. I have grown so much from working with such a diverse group of people. If this place had such a tremendous effect on my life, imagine how it impacts the kids. I just hope that people always remember the importance LVC has in preparing the future leaders of the world! These kids are amazing, and I am so glad I got to spend a summer with them. I have learned so much from them.

What is a favorite memory from your time at LVC?

My favorite memories are watching campers push their comfort zone, taking risks, and growing in ways that surprise themselves. I remember this past fall a lot of our campers had some stage fright before sharing poems that they had written. It takes a lot of courage to share something from your heart and being surrounded by strangers in an audience can be very intimidating. One camper had been working on his poem privately as the weeks went by and had shared it very quietly during our dress rehearsal. During our performance he was sharing this vulnerable work he had been so nervous to share and afterwards he had left a lot of the room in tears. It was powerful to see both the campers and the audience moved by his bravery and openness through performance. I can't wait to hear what he might write next.

What is the most valuable thing you learned at LVC?

I believe that at LVC you get out what you put in to your experience and I see this resonating in so many campers. For the outgoing and gregarious kids, they are taking camp by storm, sharing a lot of laughs, taking risks, leading with such passion that I can't help but admire each of them. There are a lot of quieter campers as well and they are soaking in all of the details, listening closely, adding their input and making me smile with how they approach each activity in their own way. A lot of campers are trying to get the most out of their time at LVC which is no wonder why everyone is always exhausted at the end of it. I think everyone knows that their time with camp is short and they have to make the most of it.

Which of the four beliefs resonates with you most strongly?

"Everyone Has the Power to Change Their World" is incredibly empowering. Whether it's through your work ethic, attitude, perspective, you can make decisions that turn your life around. By giving yourself this tool to change how you approach problems and terrible days, you are equipping yourself to do anything.

What would you like other people to know about LVC?

Everyone has a place here. Everyone has something that will make our community a stronger, better place to be. There are so many people to listen to because everyone is leading a life that is funny, interesting and different from your own. And this is the place where you get to hear about all of these crazy kids and camp counselors and share your stories too. It's just the best.

What is a favorite memory from your time at LVC?

My favourite memory at LVC has to be the ridge trip during session 2 last summer. We had an amazing evening. As well as smores and some really kool games there was alot of emotional sharing that will stay with me for the rest of my life!!!

What is the most valuable thing you learned at LVC?
The most valued thing I have learnt at LVC is how to conduct meaningful youth work. Before my first summer at camp I was going to change careers and move away from working with young people. That was until my life was changed by camp. I learnt a whole new way of working and saw a new version youth work that I wanted to bring back to the UK. LVC saved my youth work career

Which of the four beliefs resonates with you most strongly?
While I would like to say all 4 my "every living being has inherent value" sticks with me the most. I always lived by the understanding that if you want my respect you have to earn it but now I completely disagree with this. This belief shows that everybody deserves my respect before I have even met them. We are all human and more of us should live by this.

What would you like other people to know about LVC?
We do not have camps here in England so I would like people over here to see the positive work LVC does. I would like people in England to realise that we can all work together and that bringing young people together from all walks of life will benefit society as a whole.

What is a favorite memory from your time at LVC?

One of my favorite memories was teaming up with the LT’s to overcome the 12ft climbing wall. It required an enormous amount of perseverance, leadership, communication, and GRIT! Two hours later: my voice was completely gone, my arms felt like lead, and I was drenched in sweat from head to toe. The LT II’s exemplified a fiery passion that would make anyone follow them. To say the least, it was a proud moment to witness as a youth counselor.

What is the most valuable thing you learned at LVC?

Lake Valley Camp continuously inspires my passion to work with youth by providing independent leadership opportunities that push me to excel and reach my potential. As a future teacher, LVC is the perfect fit because it pushes one to step up to create engaging and educative curriculum, while building important camper relationships in the process. Through my experience, I learned to meet the needs of each individual youth by giving them the tools to set the bar high and shape their own unique leadership style.

Which of the four beliefs resonates with you most strongly?

Everyone has the Power to Change their Own World. This motivates me every day of my existence. In action, this belief promotes people to seek challenges without the fear of failure. People will learn to act accordingly by reassessing their situation and acting on thought rather than emotion. Through this process, people utilize their most important resource—themselves. Only “I” can get my grades up. Only “I” can give power over me. Only “I” can make myself better. Only “I” can decide for myself over right or wrong. Only “I” can leave my unique mark on this world.

What would you like other people to know about LVC?

The most important point about Lake Valley Camp is that it’s a family. This community works hard to ensure that it reaches out and provides opportunities to as many youth (and their families) as possible. That is unique to see. I have never felt more comfortable and confident of myself than at LVC because I know I will always have the LVC family to support my achievements and failures. At LVC I never fail—I only discover wrong answers—but I always discover the right answers from the people right there beside me.
